Beat the Heat: Safe Ways to Stay Active This Summer

Summer in New England is beautiful—but it can also be brutal when it comes to staying active. High temps, humidity, and intense sun can throw a wrench in your regular routine. But don’t hang up your sneakers just yet! With a few smart tweaks, you can stay safely on the move all season long. Here’s how:

1. Time Your Workouts Wisely

The when matters just as much as the what.

  • Early mornings or evenings are your best bet for cooler temps.
  • Avoid midday workouts (10am–3pm) when the sun is at full blast.
  • Even a quick 20-minute walk before breakfast can do wonders for your body and mind.

2. Hydrate Like It’s Your Job

No surprise here—water is everything in the heat.

  • Drink before, during, and after your workout—even if you’re not feeling thirsty.
  • Add electrolytes if you’re sweating a lot (think long walks, yard work, or beach runs).
  • Watch for signs of dehydration: headache, dry mouth, dizziness, and fatigue.

3. Switch Up Your Routine

No need to go all-out every time. Summer is the season to explore new (and gentler) ways to move.

  • Try paddleboarding, swimming, kayaking, or beach yoga.
  • Stick to low-impact activities if you’re dealing with pain or recovering from an injury.
  • Need help adapting your movement plan? That’s what we’re here for.

4. Know When to Hit Pause

You’re not being lazy—you’re being smart.

  • If you feel lightheaded, weak, or overly fatigued, listen to your body.
  • Take breaks in the shade, cool down with water, and don’t push through “just because.”
  • Your health (and safety) is more important than what your workout tracker says.
